The 55,451-gross-ton ms Ryndam entered service on October 20, 1994. The
ship, third in the company's 121-year history to bear the name, is a masterpiece of the
shipbuilders' art, combining the best of Old World tradition with state-of-the-art modern
technology.
The 720-foot-long Ryndam, built at the Fincantieri shipyard in Monfalcone, Italy, carries
1,266 guestss and a crew of 602.
The Ryndam features a $2 million collection of art and artifacts, continuing a tradition
of on-board artwork that has become a hallmark of the company's fleet. Themed to Dutch
worldwide exploration, treasures from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries reflect a time of
adventure and discovery. Original works of art created especially for the ship also are
featured in public rooms and staterooms.
The Ryndam has 10 passenger decks, with duty-free shops and most public rooms conveniently
located on Promenade and Upper Promenade decks. The public rooms are large and feature
high-quality furnishings and understated elegance.
A three-deck grand atrium, featuring a monumental fountain created by sculptor Gilbert
Lebigre in Pietrasanta, Italy, extends from Lower Promenade Deck to Upper Promenade. An
escalator provides convenient access upward to staterooms on Lower Promenade Deck for
guests embarking on Main Deck.
Located on Promenade and Upper Promenade Decks, the Rotterdam Dining Room seats 657 on two
levels connected by a pair of grand curved staircases. A music ledge on Upper Promenade,
overlooking the main floor, provides a venue for a string quartet to serenade during the
dinner hour. Windows on three sides provide sweeping views of the sea. Four large murals
by Dutch artist Gerti Bierenbroodspot depict elaborately costumed 17th Century Dutch
noblemen against a backdrop of period sailing ships. Adjacent to the upper dining room,
two private dining areas -- the King's Room and the Queen's Room -- each seat 44.
At the opposite end of the ship, the two-deck, 600-seat Vermeer Show Lounge features
Broadway-style entertainment. The show room, named for the 17th Century Dutch master
painter Jan Vermeer, has a tulip motif throughout, represented in light fixtures, wall
panels, lamps and carpeting. The show lounge is further accented by computerized fiber
optic lighting and a state-of-the-art sound system.
The 249-seat Wajang Theater, located on Promenade Deck, is used for lectures, meetings and
religious services, as well as current films. Two other rooms -- the Half Moon and Hudson
Room seating a total of 150 -- adjoin the theater and also may be used for meetings,
private parties and other scheduled activities. Complete audiovisual facilities and other
meeting aids are available. Complementing this group of rooms is the 37-seat Java Cafe,
offering espresso and cappucino for informal coffee breaks.
On Upper Promenade Deck, the adjoining Card Room, Puzzle Corner and Delft Library
accommodate quieter activities.
The 403-seat Lido Restaurant, which features an extensive buffet for casual dining at
breakfast and lunch, is adjacent to the Lido swimming pool, with its bronze sculpture of
five leaping dolphins by British artist Susanna Holt and fanciful ceramic couches by Dutch
artist Jan Snoeck, situated beneath a retractable glass dome.
Also on Lido Deck is the fully-equipped, ocean-view Ocean Spa fitness center, which
includes the beauty salon/barber shop; massage, sauna and steam rooms; and juice bar.
A second swimming pool is located one deck below Lido Deck on Navigation Deck aft. Above
the Lido Deck on Sports Deck, are located two deck tennis courts.
The Ryndam features five lounges: the Vermeer two-deck showroom, the Ocean Bar, Piano Bar,
and the Explorers Lounge on Promenade Deck, and the Crow's Nest, a combined observation
lounge and nightclub on Sports Deck overlooking the bow.
The Casino, offering blackjack, Caribbean poker, roulette, dice table and 97 slot
machines, also features an adjacent bar.
A wide teak deck encircles Lower Promenade Deck, affording space for the ship's
comfortable wooden deck chairs, as well as ample room for strolling or walking.
The Ryndam features a penthouse suite and 28 suites. Each of the 149 suites and deluxe
staterooms has a private verandah, a VCR, whirlpool bath and minibar. All staterooms are
equipped with sofas, hairdryers, individually controlled air conditioning, telephone with
computerized wakeup service, multi-channel music system and closed circuit television. In
each room the beds are convertible from one queen size to two singles. 52 staterooms have
connecting doors. Six staterooms are equipped to accommodate physically challenged guests.
